Man v. Machine v. Garbage?

I couldn't tell if veteran WUSA-TV9 reporter Bruce Johnson was serious or joking when he posted this to Twitter last week:

So is it better for workers to physically lift garbage cans, dump them in, and then ride on the back of the truck to the next stop? Or more valuable that people design, build, and service machines that relieve us of dangerous, taxing work?

It's better when we don't make policy judgments as the nature of work changes, And it's best when we embrace change and support an evolving economy through education, training, and awareness.
