The Art of the Freebie

Pandering politics pleases people pursuing plenty

Just a short post after a couple of presidential press posts. (OK, enough with the alliteration.) Yesterday, Marco Rubio came out in favor of eliminating taxes on capital gains. Meanwhile, young voters are flocking to Bernie Sanders.

The common attraction? Free stuff for the party faithful. While Mr. Rubio offered a sop to older, wealthier voters that rely on nonwage income in the form of capital gains, Mr. Sanders looked to mop up support with offers of free college and free healthcare – issues of importance to younger voters.

Though it is often said that people vote against their own best interests, here are two politicians throwing money at their base. As columnist Robert Samuelson said, "It's more fun to give."

Prudence and posterity be damned.
